Recipe for Riz Aleister Crowley

By Nico on Monday the 20th of December, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Riz Aleister Crowley and a vegetarian curryCrowley calls this recipe a “Poem of Spring”, and I decided to have a go at it for our Winter Solstice Feast on Saturday.

This picture on the left was taken afterwards, with cold leftovers, which were still delicious.

The recipe was posted on Coilhouse, where guest blogger S. Elizabeth dug up found and shared it, I’ve included Crowley’s original instructions below the cut.

Unfortunately, Crowley does not give any quantities for the ingredients, so I had to improvise. I’ve listed the ratios I used below, which can be modified to make any quantity.

This was also the first time I’ve ever made curry, and it turned out well. So well, in fact, that I’ll be making it as the vegetarian option for Giftmas dinner, along with Riz Aleister Crowley.

Awesome shortbread cookie recipe

By Nico on Friday the 17th of December, 2010 at 12:04 pm

After seeing a friend’s recipe on her blog, Edible Noir, I decided to have a go at it myself, with a few slight changes.

I love making shortbread, and I recently purchased new forest themed cookie cutters, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to try them out.

Alas, the ninjabread cookie cutters still seem to be out of stock, but if you’re lucky enough to have them, ninja shortbread would be awesome, too.

Often the shortbread I make tends to be to soft and the cookie can’t hold its shape, but these worked out perfectly.

The original recipe is her Nana’s, and you can find it here, with her commentary here.

My changes and approach are below. Continue reading »

Working from home with a kitten

By Nico on Tuesday the 14th of December, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Lydia with mousie

Lydia with mousie

Pictured left is my kitten, Lydia, patiently waiting for me to throw her mousie for the kazillionth time. And by patiently, I mean she will wait a few seconds before resulting to the tactics outlined by The Oatmeal in Cat vs Internet. He gets it. Perfectly.

Cats will try anything – anything – to get your attention.  (Lydia looks adorable in her Batcat costume, though it’s still a bit big for her.)

A few days after we got her she began to teach us fetch. At first we thought it was a fluke, but Lydia’s kept it up – accompanied with death defying acrobatics.(1)

Here’s a minute and a half of Lyd playing fetch. This is take 2342903849 so she’s a bit sleepy by the end.

Lydia is nine months old as of today, and I love her to bits, but when I want to get any work done I must close the door, or risk attack for not paying enough attention. My furniture suffers for it, but there’s art in suffering, so I win out in the end, right? Continue reading »

Footnotes:

  1. So engrossed in her mousie, she often leaps without looking first if there’s a place to land. It’s a good thing kittens are made of rubber. []
